In The Beginning and The Present
Shaun Grant
When Los Angeles based actor Shaun Grant decided to take the plunge and work toward his dreams in Los Angeles,he didn't even have enough cash to cover a month's rent in the big city of LA.
But he took the plunge and learned the craft of acting;while still including grueling daily work outs and sticking to his plan, despite major knee area injuries in High School in New Orleans, and at Louisiana Tech where he had to come to a decision on what to do in his life.
It was either being involved in football or take up the creative arts and become an actor for Shaun at the turning point, where he had to make that fateful decision. Learn everything he could about acting and find out the answers from top people in the field, that most didn't want to,or were too afraid to.
And Shaun knew he would have to spend a lot of money to be taught by the best acting coaches, ask questions from the top actors, producers and directors,to become an actor people sought out.
But what was always in the back of Shaun's mind was helping other actors as well, and help those less fortunate than himself, even though he did not have a lot in the early days of the 2000's.
Shaun started Acting in 2008 and moved to Los Angeles in 2011. With Shaun's well documented and amazing success as an actor, even I thought he had initiated his rise to acting greatness a long time before that specific time period.
Also, I asked Shaun about any mentors he had along the way,and here is what Mr. Grant had to say on that.
"The most notable mentor I had was John Bernecker (Late stuntman who died on Walking Dead set in July.) He taught me the importance of "specific hard work on what you wanted to be great at." He also gave me the confidence to realize I could succeed in the entertainment industry.
Like any other actor,it took Shaun a while to land even basic local commercials, voice overs or even bit parts. And he even considered moving back home to Louisiana, but stuck to his guns and forged ahead even though times were tough without a lot of money.
This will show your true mettle in life, especially in the acting world.
It took quite a while to land those commercials, but he always had his mind on doing films because he was learning from the best in order to be able even get top flight national commercials with EA Sports and the likes of Nike.
He then started back on the path to becoming a film actor,to prove that he was capable of doing what he set out to do. Become a film actor others looked to not just to play a role, but be a guiding force to others in the field, and work with others who had succeeded to obtain the guidance he truly strived for.
Here is my interview with Shaun: I hope Shaun can teach you something to help you become a better and more determined actor.
In your You Tube videos that teach actors various aspects of method acting,do you find budding actors or even students of yours don't practice enough,or don't have the ability to come across in a way that's believable?
I feel like with most actors I come across through coaching, it's not always a case of not having enough training, but more or less finding that connection that spans their own true essence and any realness to any character that they are portraying.
Do you find actors that come to you do work that they're not suited for?
Well, as an actor it's important to find a type, but also find that fine line between challenging your instrument and knowing when you're in too deep. To answer your question, I feel like it’s my job to help them find the work that gels well with who they are.
I'm sounding depressing Shaun, but I want others in your world to understand that people need to do this to become great at anything.
Well in regards to acting, I believe that it is important to do it at some point in their lives, mainly because it's one of the highest forms of creative expression. And every human being needs creative expression, so why not choose some form of acting.
When coaching actors do you try to steer them into roles that they're suited for,and not just try any and everything?
In the beginning of an actors career, unless they've been guided beforehand, this is usually something that isn't quite figured out yet. Early on, or just getting started as an actor trying any and everything is an ideal way to see where you fit in and where you will be the most successful. One thing you have to know is, if you're going to market yourself successfully, you're going to need a type.
Is getting an actors body ready for a role also part of what you coach?
Yes! Acting can be physically demanding at times and I've been a fitness professional for over 15 years. The goal of any actor should always be to not only use their mental and emotional strength, but their physical and spiritual strength as well. This "Body Shaping" I guess you would call it, allows the actor to use his/her entire instrument.
I mean training with weights,cardio,nutrition--and even mental training?
Yep, everything comes into play whenever I work with actors
.
When actors see your Youtube "how to" videos what would you like them to do in regards to practicing and getting down those methods of acting?
First understand it at a level that resonates with you because from there, it will be easier to perform it and perform it well. Second, repetition. Repeat it as much as you can because like going to the gym, the method of vibrational acting is a matter of tapping into one's essence and developing that muscle. The more this is implemented, the easier it will become.
It took quite a while to land those commercials, but he always had his mind on doing films because he was learning from the best in order to be able even get top flight national commercials with EA Sports and the likes of Nike.
Shaun has starred in numerous movies and started his own Production company “Uplifter Entertainment.Shaun is very innovative and working more on the creative side of the acting process and has 3 films in the can ready to release; “Ring Warriors,” “Truth Unveiled” and “Night Train” all scripted and written by Shaun himself.
You can learn a lot from what Shaun does not just in the acting process, but as a screenwriter and producer as well.
Shaun works endlessly to be a talent that doesn’t just get the job,but be the right fit for certain roles. And with that he injected himself into roles in including a National Geographic film as a fitness guru in “How Human Are You” and Floodwall Here and Digital Love Of A Robot Soul. and Brawler.
Large release films that Shaun starred in were ones he gained the most from, not just for any advice or compliments, but for being a humble actor willing to learn from those who were many years ahead of him acting wise. Those such as Luke Goss who said this:“NOT ONLY IS HE TALENTED, BUT VERY COMPASSIONATE AND GIVING AS AN ACTOR. IT SHOWS THROUGH HIS DELIVERY.”
Even when Shaun was cast in “Blood Out” where he played a cop with scruples who goes out of his way to help others, like Shaun does in actual life, his cast members noticed this about him,and we’re floored by his ability on the set to project his lines like he was in the acting field for many decades.
Even 50 Cent said he was one of the most talented and believable actors he’d ever seen.
“The next step for me is to continue to work as an actor but also delve more into the creative process. This way I can ensure that the work I am inspiring will be of an uplifting nature.” -Shaun Robert Grant!
It goes without saying that Shaun Robert Grant is definitely someone to be on the lookout for!!
